You can still have a sex life even with a catheter – Catheter use doesn’t mean that you can’t have sex

sex life with a catheter

If you think incontinence means you can no longer enjoy a healthy sex life with a catheter, think again. You can do the things you normally do, including have sex, with a little creativity. These ideas are from men who are also living with incontinence.

Empty your bladder before sex

Some men have found that spacing liquids can help prevent problems. Find the right balance. You don’t want to let yourself become dehydrated, but you also don’t want to down a mega-sized drink all at once either. Maintain adequate hydration levels and limit liquids two hours before sex. Empty your bladder completely just before sex. Avoid anything you know that causes you trouble several hours before sex. Common trouble makers are caffeine, spicy foods, citrus, and alcohol.

Work with the condom

You may find that it works to tape the tube to your penis and cover both with a condom. Hang the collection bag out of sight if seeing it ruins the mood.

Have sex in the shower

Again, keep yourself hydrated. When you are dehydrated urine can have a strong odor and dark color. If your bladder releases in the shower, you’ll have less worry and interruption.

Keep a towel handy

Use a silent, heavy-duty mattress protector for backup if accidents happen. It’s also a good idea to keep a towel nearby.

Rethink intimacy

Many men have found new ways to connect with their partner and enjoy a deeper, more satisfying sex life. Foreplay, cuddling, and conversation can all be important ways to share intimacy. Be creative. Talk together about what works in your changing bodies. Explore and be adventurous to learn what you enjoy now.
