I’m incontinent, now what: The guide for recently diagnosed incontinence

incontinence diagnosis

Incontinence is a common and manageable medical diagnosis. Here are a few things to think about after your incontinence diagnosis.

Congratulations

Maybe it doesn’t feel like congratulations are in order, but they are. Despite the signs, many men do not have the courage to visit the doctor to understand what is going on and learn about their options. As the saying goes, you can’t fix what you won’t face. Good on you for facing it. Now it’s time to decide what you will do about incontinence, so it doesn’t stop you from doing what you enjoy.

Control the controllable

There are things you can do at home to improve your symptoms. Dietary changes (such as less, citrus, spicy foods, caffeine), smoking cessation and weight loss can help. You may also want to try simple hacks like double voiding (urinate, wait a few minutes, urinate again) and not overwhelming your bladder (drink 8 ounces at a time rather than 16). Another helpful strategy is to strengthen the pelvic floor with Kegel exercises.

How to do Kegels: Locate the muscle you’ll need to contract by stopping the flow of urine the next time you use the toilet. Once you have located the muscle, practice contracting it. Perform three sets of ten Kegels to start. You can increase this number as the muscle gets stronger. Strengthening your pelvic floor is especially helpful if you have overactive bladder. Overactive bladder is one of four main types of incontinence. Symptoms include frequent, sudden urges to urinate.
