Wash hands thoroughly before using catheters

To minimize the risk of infection, carefully wash your hands with warm water and soap before and after handling your catheter and accessories.

Maintain a sterile environment

Do not allow your hands or any part of the catheter or supplies to come into contact with any surface in the bathroom.  Consider using a bathroom with little traffic that gives you enough space to manage your catheter.

Manage food and drink

Good catheter management requires healthy eating habits. The opposite may seem true, but it is important to drink plenty of water even when you are managing incontinence. Although individual needs vary, a good rule of thumb is one ounce of water for your body weight divided by two. That means if you weigh 200 pounds, you should aim for about 100 ounces of water daily. Another way to gauge adequate intake is to monitor the color of your urine. Urine that is pale yellow in color, generally indicates adequate hydration. Likewise, you will want to support regular digestion and avoid becoming constipated. Adequate hydration, fiber and whole grain rich foods support healthy elimination.

Take care of your skin

Change condom catheters regularly and monitor skin for any signs of trouble. Use barrier creams as needed for protection.
